Our cotton fabrics are not just for quilting as today's fabrics lend themselves to more than quilts, they can look stunning made into bags & accessories, cushions, home decor throughtout the house and can be used for dressmaking too.
Quilting today, is enjoying a wave of popularity as a creative art form whilst continuing a functional means of keeping warm. Whilst some sewers and quilters prefer the traditional techniques the sewing machine can speed the process to aid our busy lives.
Choosing quality fabrics is paramount for successful quilting and patchwork projects. The right fabric not only enhances the visual appeal of your creation but also ensures its longevity. Primarily, 100% cotton is the gold standard for quilting, prized for its durability, minimal shrinkage (with proper pre-washing), and ease of handling.
Here's a breakdown of what to consider:
Fiber Content:
Opt for 100% cotton for its stability and compatibility with other quilting fabrics.
Avoid blends that may behave differently during washing and over time.
Thread Count and Weave:
A higher thread count generally indicates a denser, more durable fabric.
Look for a tight, even weave that will hold up to stitching and frequent use.
Colorfastness:
Quality fabrics undergo processes to prevent color bleeding.
Check for labels indicating colorfastness or perform a test wash on a small swatch.
Feel and Drape:
The fabric should feel substantial yet pliable.
Consider how the fabric drapes, as this will affect the finished look of your project.
Investing in quality fabrics ensures that your quilts and patchwork pieces become cherished heirlooms, capable of withstanding the test of time.
