a scarf really needs to be at least 60" (150cm) for an adult and we find that it's more interesting to knit with a multi coloured ball rather than a single shade and it does seem to grow quicker, meaning you shouldn't get bored whilst knitting

a coloured yarn can sometimes hide small knitting imperfections, you're not going to hide dropped stitches etc but uneven tension can be camouflaged to a degree, and you can build your skills and confidence whilst scarf knitting !
