Its origins trace back to the Andean highlands of South America, primarily in Peru, Bolivia, and Chile, where alpacas have been domesticated for thousands of years.

Origin and Production:

Alpaca fiber is harvested by shearing the fleece of alpacas, similar to sheep shearing.

These animals thrive in the high-altitude, extreme climates of the Andes, which has contributed to the development of their remarkably warm and resilient coats.

The fleece is then cleaned, processed, and spun into yarn.

There are two main types of alpaca fleece, Huacaya and Suri.

Warmth and Softness:

Alpaca fiber's warmth stems from its unique hollow structure, which traps air and provides excellent insulation. This makes it significantly warmer than sheep's wool.

Its softness is attributed to the smooth, fine fibers, which lack the scales found in sheep's wool that can cause itchiness.
